A six-month quest by a group of school parents to influence the 2008 Hillside municipal budget ended in frustration and futility Tuesday night.

Last night a record numbers of Hillsiders visited their neighborhood polling locations to cast a vote for their preference for President of the United States.  Here in Hillside, Illinois Senator Barack Obama defeated Hillary Clinton of New York 2954 to 1532 carrying 9 of 13 districts in the Township. Interestingly, 25 Democrats chose to vote for a mix of Congressman Kucinich of Ohio, Governor Richardson of New Mexico, Senators Edwards of North Carolina and Biden of Deleware all of whom have ended their campaigns over the past month.

While Senator Obama didn’t win the state of New Jersey last night, it’s important to note that he overcame UCDO-backed Hillary Clinton all across Union County 38,184 to 35,345.  As I mentioned several weeks ago, I was selected as a delegate candidate by Senator Obama along with Newark Mayor Corey Booker, Newark Council President President Mildred Crump and Newark’s West Ward Councilman Ron L. Rice. In the fifteenth delegate district which is made of all of Hillside, Irvington and parts of Newark, we defeated the Clinton team 32,843 to 25,964.

Senator Barack Obama has said that this election is not about Black or White. It’s not about Christians, Jews or Muslims. It’s about whether we want to move forward into the future or whether we want to reverse course and revisit the past. Last night in Hillside and all throughout Union County, Democrats opted for a brighter future and a new type of politics.
